With the government shutdown temporarily over, President Donald Trump’s State of the Union address scheduled for Tuesday is back on… right?
Not so fast, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s office said.
According to House Minority Whip Steve Scalise, Pelosi and pals have decided to hold the State of the Union “hostage” and have refused to answer questions about the address.
It seems the shutdown was just an excuse for Pelosi to keep Trump away from the grand stage.
“I thought it was disgraceful that she removed the State of the Union from the invitation that she had already issued to the president,” Scalise told Fox News’ “Sunday Morning Futures.” “I think Nancy Pelosi is afraid of the country hearing this message that the president has about why we need to secure the border.”
“The State of the Union is not planned now,” Pelosi said Friday. Talks between Democrats and the White House have been ongoing, but no official date has been reached.
“What I’d said to the president is when the government is open, we will discuss a mutually agreeable date,” Pelosi told reporters on Friday. “I’ll look forward to doing that and welcoming the president to the House of Representatives for the State of the Union when we agree on that mutually agreeable date.”
The latest rumors have the State of the Union potentially held on Feb. 5, but Scalise is unhappy that Pelosi is delaying the talks.
“Feb. 5 is a date that seems to work well,” Scalise said. “Frankly I think it’s something the American people look at in a very negative way when they look at Nancy Pelosi trying to hold the State of the Union hostage as part of this debate over border security.”
