Fox News Channel, the dominant cable news channel for the past decade, was ousted from the number one slot by MSNBC on Monday.
The interview of former Rep. Liz Cheney, R-Wyo., by part-time host Rachel Maddow scored a stunning win and dwarfed her rival cable news hosts on Fox News and CNN.
Cheney appeared to promote her new book, “Oath and Honor: A Memoir and a Warning” and told Maddow that former President Donald Trump was a would-be dictator… and that she was considering running for president.
“I disagree with Liz Cheney about everything. My whole adult life on everything in politics, I would not just say that Liz Cheney and I were on different proverbial teams, I would say we are from different proverbial planets,” Maddow told viewers. “And they are planets that are mostly at war with each other.”
The viewers ate it up.
The Rachel Maddow Show scored a jaw-dropping 3.15 million viewers on Monday, Nielsen reported.
That dwarfed rival Fox News star Sean Hannity’s Hannity, who had 1.9 million in the same time slot. CNN’s The Source with Kaitlan Collins had a total audience of just 375,000 viewers.
The afterglow even helped MSNBC’s Lawrence O’Donnell beat out Fox News’ Greg Gutfeld, 2 million to 1.68 million, in the following timeslot.
Hannity finished 5th overall in ratings for Fox News on Monday night, a very low finish for the longtime cable news star. The four proceeding shows on Fox News Channel — The Five (2.92), Special Report with Bret Baier (2.21), The Ingraham Angle (1.97), and Jesse Watters Primetime (2.37) — all boasted higher ratings than Hannity’s 1.9 million.
