At least four people are believed dead and approximately 30 injured in a devastating mass shooting at Apalachee High School in Winder, Georgia, on Wednesday morning.
The attack has left the small community of around 18,000 residents in shock as authorities work to piece together the details of the tragedy.
Law enforcement sources report that the shooting began around 9:30 a.m. when authorities received a call about an active gunman at the school. Barrow County Sheriff Jud Smith confirmed “multiple injuries” but refrained from providing specific numbers, and said the investigation is ongoing and the situation remains fluid.
A suspect of student age is reportedly in custody, though it remains unclear whether they attend Apalachee High. The school, which has an enrollment of about 1,900 students, was quickly placed on lockdown along with all other schools in the Barrow County School System as a precautionary measure.
Emergency responders were seen the scene, with at least five ambulances and a large law enforcement presence converging on the school. Some critically injured victims were reportedly airlifted from the site, with additional medical helicopters standing by. Grady Health System in Atlanta confirmed receiving one gunshot victim via helicopter.
Footage from the scene showed students and staff gathered on the school’s football field, with some appearing to pray as the crisis unfolded. As the immediate threat subsided, students were cleared to leave, with parents notified to pick them up and transportation provided for those in need.
The FBI and Georgia Bureau of Investigation have joined local authorities in the investigation. Governor Brian Kemp has directed all available state resources to assist and called for prayers for those affected.
“This is going to take multiple days to get answers,” Sheriff Smith stated during a brief news conference, asking for patience as the investigation continues.
The White House confirmed that President Joe Biden has been briefed on the situation, with his administration coordinating with federal, state, and local officials.
