President Joe Biden was caught on a hot mic talking to Rep. Maxine Waters, D-Calif., on Thursday — and critics called the moment “unhinged.”
At a White House bill signing event with House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif., Rep. Chuy Garcia, D-I.L., and Waters, the microphone Biden was wearing picked up the strange exchange.
Biden is heard referring to the longtime California Democrat as Maxine “Walters” and forgot she was not running for senator.
“Senator, I hope,” he can be heard saying. “You think I’m kidding. I’m not.”
Biden seemed to be confusing Waters with Rep. Val Demings, D-Fla., who is challenging Sen. Marco Rubio, R-F.L., for his senate seat.
