Speculation has run rampant about presumptive Democratic presidential candidate Joe Biden’s running mate.
Biden has said it will be a woman. He asked Michelle Obama, who said she wasn’t interested.
And now Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, D-N.Y. is addressing rumors of her involvement with a Biden campaign.
The New York Times proposed “national unity cabinet” last month, floating the idea of Ocasio-Cortez becoming Biden’s U.N. Ambassador. That started rumors online that Ocasio-Cortez could become a close member of Biden’s inner circle… with some social media users suggesting she could even become Biden’s running mate.
Ocasio-Cortez said she’s interested in being vice president in the past. Of course, she won’t be old enough until the 2024 election, according to the Consitution.
The Times piece caught the eye of Ocasio-Cortez, who reportedly just about lives next door to U.N. headquarters in New York.
“That was the one perk of this,” she joked about being U.N Ambassador. “I would get to stay home.”
But ultimately, Ocasio-Cortez says she’s not really interested in a role as one of Biden’s cabinet members.
“Probably not,” she told New York Times when asked about whether or not she’d serve in a Biden White House.
It comes as no surprise to experts that the congresswoman isn’t thrilled about the idea of a Biden 2020 victory, but she sees an opportunity where he could be swayed.
“I think the fact that he is an older white man kind-of has a Santa Claus soothing effect on a lot of traditional voters,” Ocasio-Cortez said. “I’m convinced that Biden could essentially adopt Bernie’s agenda, and it would not be a factor — as long as he continued to say things like malarkey. And just not be Trump.”
