A violent attack outside the Adas Torah synagogue in Los Angeles’s Pico-Robertson neighborhood has drawn widespread condemnation from local and national leaders, highlighting growing antisemitism among Democrats amid the ongoing Israel-Hamas conflict.
The violence, which occurred on Sunday, involved a mob of pro-Palestinian demonstrators entering the predominately Jewish neighborhood and confronting counterprotesters, resulting in at least one arrest and raising concerns about the safety of Jewish communities in the United States.
Eyewitnesses reported that the mob formed outside the synagogue, leading to physical altercations between the opposing groups. The Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD) later intervened to quell the violence, but not before the situation had escalated significantly.
Residents say they now feel threatened in what should be a safe space for worship and community gathering.
Los Angeles Democratic Mayor Karen Bass called the violence at the place of worship “abhorrent” and unacceptable. In response to the incident, Bass said she had requested increased police patrols in the Pico-Robertson area and around synagogues throughout the city.
Councilwoman Katy Yaroslavsky, who represents the district where the incident occurred, also pointed out the antisemitic nature of the attack and expressed particular concern about its location.
“Everyone has the right to protest, and everyone also has the right to be safe from fear and violence,” Yaroslavsky stated.
The clash outside Adas Torah synagogue is not an isolated incident but part of a troubling trend of increased antisemitic acts in the United States and globally.
As the Israel-Hamas war continues to unfold, its repercussions are being felt far beyond the Middle East.
