The race for the 2024 Republican presidential nomination has already begun — and for the first time, former President Donald Trump is no longer the frontrunner.
In an unbiased straw poll of attendees at the 2021 Western Conservative Summit, Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis stunned the attendees when he beat Trump in a presidential opinion poll.
DeSantis’ victory was razor thin. He edged out Trump by a narrow 2.69 percent
The poll, held by The Karios Company, asked attendees at the Centennial Institute event: “Vote for all candidates you approve of for President in 2024.”
The choices listed included 30 top politicians, both Democrats and Republicans.
Voters were allowed to make more than one selection.
“The top five candidates, in order of most approval to least, were: Ron DeSantis (74%), Donald Trump (71%), Sen. Ted Cruz (43%), Mike Pompeo (39%) and Sen. Tim Scott (36%),” the group said in a press release. “Former Vice President Pence came in tenth place.”
The highest-ranking Democrats were Michelle Obama (3%), Elizabeth Warren (3%), and President Job Biden (2%).
“Question two asked attendees to mark any of 25 policy issues as most important to them,” the Centennial Institue’s press release said.
“The top five most important issues were: Immigration/Border Security (82%), Election Integrity (79%), Religious Freedom (75%), Federal Budget/Deficit (74%) and Gun Rights (74%).”
