In a chilling CNN segment, Rep. Sara Jacobs, D-Calif. — a top Democratic lawmaker — said she’s calling for an official “Truth Commission” to be formed at the federal level.
And she says it’s “just the beginning” of her plan to remake the United States, and our country’s history.
Jacobs said this ‘Truth Commission’ was necessary because of the riot at the U.S. Capitol building on Jan. 6.
“What exactly would a ‘Truth Commission’ be?” CNN’s Brian Stetler asked Jacobs on Monday.
“Part of what we’re seeing now is because we haven’t really done the reckoning on the racial justice and white supremacy of our past,” Jacobs said. She compared America to the former apartheid state of South Africa.
“Basically, what it is is that communities, all the way up to the national level, having conversations about both the gore and glory of our history and what happened,” she said. “Both throughout the history of our country, and leading up to — and on — January 6.”
Jacobs said Americans need to “come to a common narrative moving forward on what we want our country to be.”
“Do you think the House and Senate leadership have the stomach for that?” Stetler asked.
“I think so,” she replied. “Look, we all were all victims in this attack in addition to being the lawmakers in this country. I know for a lot of us, this is very personal.”
She said the second impeachment trial of Donald Trump was just the beginning of their effort to punish the former president — and also the beginning of the Democratic Party’s vision for America’s future.
“We need to make sure that we’re doing accountability of anyone who incited, encouraged, or committed acts of violence, and then really looking forward at things like ‘Truth Commissions.'”
She said a ‘Truth Commission’ would help prevent things like the January 6th riot. She blamed the violent unrest on social media and “far-right” television news channels for spreading a “Big Lie” to the American people.
“We need to look at far-right media, which I know, Brian, you have been such a leader on calling out,” she said. “As well as social media, where the kinds of information and the kinds of posts that get the biggest reactions are the ones prioritized by their algorithms.”
