As the second impeachment trial of former President Donald Trump takes shape, Republicans are warning against a long and drawn out political sideshow.
Sen. Lindsey Graham, R-S.C. says he wants to open the floor to a vote as soon as the trial starts.
Should Democrats call witnesses to testify and delay the vote to make the proceedings a “political commercial”, Graham revealed to Fox News’ Trey Gowdy that he has a bombshell ready.
He’ll call in the FBI.
“If the House leaders want to use this as a political commercial against Donald Trump and Republicans… if they want to call witnesses now that they didn’t call during the impeachment process in the House, this thing could go for weeks or months,” Graham told Fox News’ Trey Gowdy. “And that would be bad for the country.”
“To my Democratic colleagues: If you vote to call one witness – and none were called in the House – get ready for a long trial,” he said.
“Do you anticipate witnesses being called, and then being cross-examined?” Gowdy asked.
“I hope not,” Graham responded. “They didn’t call any in the House. I think we know what happened that day.”
“But if you open up that can of worms, we’ll want the FBI to come in and tell us about how people actually pre-planned these attacks and what happened with the security footprint at the Capitol.”
“You open up Pandora’s Box if you call one witness,” Graham said. “I hope we don’t call any and we vote to get this trial over next week when it starts.”
