From White Castle to the big house.
A small-town Democratic Kentucky mayor was in search of a late night snack when she made a serious mistake that led to her arrest. According to authorities Beverly Chester-Burton, mayor of Shively, Kentucky, fell asleep in the drive-thru line at popular fast food chain White Castle, before slamming into a pole on her way out of the parking lot late Tuesday night.
She was under the influence, police say, and charged with a DUI.
Chester-Burton originally told police that she had simply “lost control” of her car while trying to leave the parking lot.
But witnesses tell a different story, according to WHAS 11.
Eyewitnesses say that people on the scene noticed Chester-Burton asleep in her car and tried knocking on her window to wake her up. This was when reports say that she hit the car in front of her which cause a chain reaction, before she attempted to flee the scene and ultimately collided with a utility pole.
Chester-Burton according to her admission had consumed two apple martinis at 5 p.m., but later changed her story, saying she had them at 9 p.m. with dinner.
Police meanwhile say that the mayor stunk of alcohol and couldn’t pass a field sobriety test, failing to walk in a straight line.
Her blood alcohol level was not disclosed in the reports.
Chester-Burton, elected in 2018, was the first African-American mayor in Shively’s history.
