President Donald Trump has been criticized for his reluctance to wear a mask at times amid the global pandemic — but he appears to have softened on his stance in recent weeks.
Now, he’s asking his supporters to do the same.
The president has repeatedly sparred with mainstream media reporters over the issue.
But Monday, the Trump campaign urged its supporters to cover up, expressing Trump’s support for mask-wearing going forward.
“We are all in this together, and while I know there has been some confusion surrounding the usage of face masks, I think it’s something we should all try to do when we are not able to be socially distanced from others,” he wrote.
“We have nothing to lose,” the message added.
The president publicly wore a mask for the first time visiting veterans at Walter Reed Memorial Hospital in Bethesda, Maryland a few weeks ago.
“I think it’s a great thing to wear a mask,” he said at the time. “I’ve never been against masks but I do believe they have a time and a place.”
In his letter to supporters, Trump admitted that he’s not in love with wearing masks — but said they could help get America back on track and fight the pandemic.
“I don’t love wearing them either. Masks may be good, they may be just O.K., or they may be great. They can possibly help us get back to our American way of life that so many of us rightfully cherished before we were so terribly impacted by the China virus.”
In his message, he also declared wearing masks a patriotic act.
” … there is no one more patriotic than me and you. Why not give it a shot!”
According to Newsmax, more than half of the states have mandated legislation requiring citizens to wear masks.
