Fox News Business made a move early in the weekend that surprised many political media pundits.
The network released primetime host Trish Regan, executives announced Friday.
Fox News officials had put Regan on hiatus on Mar. 13th, saying that the show would be “on hiatus until further notice,” in order to make room for the increasing amount of COVID-19 coverage.
But the bosses announced that the network had parted ways indefinitely with the popular host on Friday.
The move left pundits buzzing, and many speculated that the breakup stemmed from Regan’s controversial comments about the coronavirus earlier this month. As the global pandemic began to take form across the world, on Mar. 9 she made headlines for asserting that the deadly virus was a hoax attempt at impeaching the president.
“This is impeachment all over again,” she said at the time.
The New York Times wrote that the decision stunned colleagues at the network, as “Fox executives are accustomed to withstanding public pressure, and rarely make personnel moves that can be construed as validating criticisms of the network.”
In the aftermath of the split, both parties have released statements about Regan’s time at FBN.
Regan, in a statement released through the network, said she was looking forward to the next chapter of life and ready to spend time with family.
A Fox Business statement obtained by Axios read, “We thank her for her contributions to the network over the years and wish her continued success in her future endeavors. We will continue our reduced live primetime schedule for the foreseeable future in an effort to allocate staff resources to continuous breaking news coverage on the Coronavirus crisis.”
