NBC News’ “Today” show star Savannah Guthrie underwent emergency surgery because of an “enthusiastic toddler” and a bizarre accident, the network reported Wednesday.
Guthrie was accidentally hit in the eye with a toy train by her 3-year-old son Charley last week.
Doctors had used laser treatments that weekend to help Guthrie overcome the blurriness and avoid “major surgery.”
Guthrie underwent five laser treatments in a week, but her doctors reportedly grew concerned the injury had become “serious” and the retina was in danger of detaching.
She underwent eye surgery on Wednesday morning.
“Charley threw a toy train right at my eye and it tore my retina,” Guthrie explained to the audience in a phone interview. “It happened last week, actually, and then I lost my vision in my right eye about 24 hours later.”
“It turned out to be kind of serious. They were afraid my retina would detach,” she said. “They told me to just take it easy and they’ve been doing a bunch of laser procedures trying to avoid having to do the whole surgery… [The toy] has a really pointy edge and he threw it right at me.”
“I really did lose my vision in my right eye,” Guthrie explained. “It was so blurry from… not to get too gross… but there was so much blood inside my eye, it completely blocked my vision.”
