As the Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Church in Chicago readies for what may be one of its last services, something mysterious happened that has reassured her faithful worshippers.
The church owes $8 million in debt and was foreclosured on Tuesday, where it was sold off in bankruptcy court. The church congregation now has 75 days to relocate.
In the face of the shuttering of the historic church, the Virgin Mary reportedly let her presence be known.
Worshippers say they saw an icon of the Blessed Mother crying real tears.
“There’s something that she’s trying to tell us,” Father Nick Jonas said, “so we’re just going to seal our lips and listen to what she has to say.”
An oil-like substance ran from her eyes shortly before church officials appeared in court, a local ABC station reported. Many worshipers were stunned by the revelation. Some are calling it a sign from God.
Others claim the tears possess healing properties.
“I can’t explain why she is tearing, but I do know as human beings we are usually crying for two reasons: either joy or sorrow,” Fr. Jonas said.
When word spread about this potential miracle, hundreds flocked to the church to witness the phenomenon, including a nun who drove from California.
“It’s the type of thing you never forget and I always will be inspired by it,” said Mother Angelina.
According to Chicago’s ABC13, the church is the second oldest Greek Orthodox Church in the country at more than 100 years old.
