Former Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid has a wish: That the 2017 #MeToo movement didn’t affect his friends.
When public figures are forced from office after sexual assault allegations, Reid wishes it was only Republicans — not Democrats like former Sen. Al Franken, D-Minn. — that were named and shamed.
In fact, Reid doesn’t think Franken should have ever quit — and he wants the disgraced former senator to run for office again.
“I wish he would,” Reid told The Daily Beast. “But I don’t think he will. He just feels hurt. And he was a good senator.”
“He got a bad deal,” Reid said, and Democrats shouldn’t have called for his resignation.
“Franken told the New Yorker in a recent interview that he regrets bowing to pressure to resign. Many of his Senate colleagues also expressed remorse for urging him to resign, though they have not called for him to run again,” The Washington Examiner reported.
In total, eight women accused Franken of inappropriately groping and kissing them at various events. A U.S. Army veteran said Franken grabbed her breast and held it without permission. Two women say he fondled their buttocks in a crowd, and two said he “aggressively” kissed them without permission.
“I realized almost right away I’d made a mistake,” former Florida Democratic Sen. Bill Nelson said. “I felt terrible. I should have stood up for due process to render what it’s supposed to — the truth.”
Sen. Patrick Leahy, D-V.T., said demanding Franken’s resignation was “one of the biggest mistakes I’ve made” in his career.
