Last week, President Donald Trump said he planned to select a U.N. ambassador to replace Nikki Haley very soon — and according to sources, a former Fox News star is one of the top contender.
Trump said Saturday after a campaign rally in Nevada: “We’ll have somebody great … we’re going to pick somebody very quickly.”
Fox News reports that two sources familiar with the selection have stated that former Fox News star Heather Nauert is a “leading contender” to replace Haley.
Haley announced earlier this month that she was leaving the job by the end of the year. She has often been an unpredictable and independent force in the Trump administration.
Trump said he’s interviewing three women and two men for the post. When he was asked if he would prefer to have a woman in the job, he said “Yes,” later adding: “I think I might prefer that, but we’ll see.”
Nauert is currently a Spokesperson for the Department of State, and was named to the position in April of 2017. She was also named Acting Under Secretary of State for Public Diplomacy and Public Affairs earlier this year.
Fox News reports that on Monday, Nauert and Trump had a meeting in the Oval Office, but the details of their discussion have not been announced.
Besides Nauert, other familiar names have floated around as possible replacements, including former deputy national security adviser Dina Powell and U.S. Ambassador to Russia Jon Huntsman.
