A Tennessee woman’s $1.2 million estate has gone to the dogs — and cats, too.
The Johnson City Press reports Glenda Taylor DeLawder’s bequest to an animal shelter was announced Christmas Day on the Carter County government website by Mayor Leon Humphrey.
Humphrey says $540,000 will be given to the Elizabethton Carter County Animal Shelter to expand the dog and cat holding areas. It also pay for a new van that can be converted to transport dogs and cats to be spayed and neutered.
Construction will begin on the shelter expansion Jan. 9, and Humphrey says the van is scheduled to arrive by March 1.
DeLawder, who is described by her family as being an avid animal lover, died in November 2015.

I love dogs and cats, too. I just hope no one comes on here bashing this woman’s generosity by stating that she should have left it to children. People can help themselves. Poverty is exacerbated by having too many children which can be controlled by birth control, if only it were utilized. Hooray for this woman.

I totally agree with you Barbara and so does Doris Day. She has written to me in the past and has always said that there are a lot of people that do help children, which is nice, but we need more people to help animals. There are so many of them being abused to and people need to turn these idiots in to the authorities so these precious dogs, cats, horses, even cows, pigs to are being abused in a horrible way, but we need to get many of these animals out of the hands of these horrible people. I’ve helped as many dogs and cats as I could over the years. I saved 7 dogs from a dog officer that was going to shoot them. I kept all of them. I’m so glad that somebody agrees with me. Thank you Lisa to. Your so right about people having to many children. I don’t like these programs on t.v they put on about these couples and their 10 children or more and they need baby carriages and diapers and baby cribs and other things for them. They shouldn’t have them in the first place. It’s wrong when there are children in this world they can adopt. So, giving to abused animals is what is needed in this world. All they know is to trust us and so many people get them just to abuse them.

She was a wonderful, compassionate person to do this for our fur babies that need help. I think all of us dog lovers or cat lovers would love to be able to do something on this scale for the animals.
We need more people in this world, like this lady!! Her money will go for much needed projects to protect and help animals who depend on people for all their various needs. Blessings to this grand lady!!
I say to the precious caring lady who left her money to give abandoned and
stray animals a chance at life THANK YOU. I say that as i type this with 3 rescues asleep in
my lap on a cold morning as it rains outside. All are ferals, and i have other’s. They
all tamed immediately. So don’t think because a Feral cat is one, that they cannot be
tamed. That is an excuse my kill shelter gives and lives by and Ferals brought in are
immediately gassed. I won’t use the term euthanized or put to sleep as, that excuses the
horror that they go through.
