In a meeting with scores of pastors in Orlando on Thursday night, Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump promised to end a 62-year-long war waged by liberals against conservatives’ free speech.
His proposal could hold the key to conservatives winning the 2016 election, and decades more elections down the road — and it has supporters cheering.
Trump told the group, assembled by the American Renewal Project, that he would repeal a federal ordinance that keeps Christians out of the political square and has had them walking on eggshells every election since 1954.
The Johnson Amendment says that pastors can risk their churches’ tax-exempt status if they too openly or vocally support political candidates.
In 1954, Lyndon B. Johnson was running for re-election to the U.S. Senate. But “Landslide Lyndon,” who won his races after allegations of widespread vote fraud, was too liberal for solidly conservative Texas. Pastors and others in the nonprofit world spoke out against him, sometimes from the pulpit.
That was nothing new. From the founding of the country, preachers played an important role in politics. Their sermons helped fire up the colonists to overthrow King George and win their freedom.
In fact, history books once called the American Revolution, “The Presbyterian Revolution.”
Lyndon Johnson had enough and decided to use the power of the federal government to silence his enemies. His amendment said any church whose leader endorses a candidate for office will be punished by losing its tax-exempt status.
So churches went silent. Pastors preached only politically correct sermons.
And LBJ won re-election, big time.
Bud Kennedy, a columnist for the Fort Worth Star-Telegram, defended LBJ, saying, “According to former aides and the Lyndon Baines Johnson Library and Museum in Austin, he never meant to restrict any church.”
But if LBJ wanted to protect churches, he could have changed the wording of his amendment any time over the next 15 years, when he was one of the most powerful Senate leaders and presidents in modern history.
Instead, he shut Christians up to secure his own political fortune. After the Kennedy assassination, he was able to turbocharge the draft, dig in on our no-win war in Vietnam, pass new welfare state programs, and add almost as much to the national debt as JFK and Eisenhower combined.
And church leaders couldn’t say anything about it.
Donald Trump told pastors on Thursday he would repeal the Johnson Amendment, end the federal harassment of churches, and give religious conservatives back their voice in their own country.
“You’ve been silenced, like a child has been silenced,” Mr. Trump, who is a Presbyterian, told pastors. “Your power has been totally taken away.”
He said instead of stifling “an evil voice,” the Democrats “took away the voice of people that want to see good things happen.”
Like everything else, liberals have applied a double standard to this law, using the IRS to bully and intimidate conservative Christians while turning a blind eye to churches that openly turn out Democratic votes in the inner city.
Democrat politicians speak to church services in historically black churches, and the IRS has never lifted a finger to stop the leftist political sermons of “holy men” like Jesse Jackson, Al Sharpton, and Jeremiah Wright.
This amendment is another example of how the government stacks the deck against average Americans, while well-connected PC preachers who grease the skids and grant favors to left-wing politicians get tax breaks and special favors.
They’re used to playing by a different set of rules, and Donald Trump will end that, once and for all.
Mr. Trump concluded his speech by saying that winning the presidential election, and unleashing the voice of the church, is “maybe the only way I’m going to get to Heaven.”
It also might be the only way America is saved.

in 2008 our Lions club lost their tax exempt status along with 250,000 other tax exempt organizations …..It was 2012 by the time we had lost it ……….we sent our request to have it re instated in September of 2012 It was conveniently lost….and after December of that year we had to pay an additional $450 to get it back………….and I have just read an article lately and in 2012 they conveniently lost much of their correspondence that would have reinstated many tax exempt organizations………..when you have 250,000 organizations that this happened to ….you know that you have a problem on the governments side and if only half of those organizations got caught up in that can you imagine how much money our government made…………Our treasurer had an accountant taking care of our “postcard tax” how did he not know that……..I totally believe that that was a scam set up by the government

After the “Late Unpleasantness” (Civil War) Blacks found their political voice in the only assembly they had: the Black churches, and that has remained with them even through recent years. No one, and I mean NO ONE has had the temerity to challenge that fact for fear of being branded “racist.” As a retired pastor who has always sought to be fair, not for fear of losing tax exemption for the church, but because it is ethical: I/we would never promote a candidate nor let one speak who was, at the time, running for office. In 1976 a candidate running for national office asked my wife and I to be his local campaign chairs. I responded, “No, for two reasons: First, I believe a minister cannot be overtly political because we have to reach everyone, Second, we would later be moving from the district to another state. That candidate now has national recognition (in spite of our bailing out!). I still believe churches shouldn’t engage in active political promotion, BUT we should have the option, based on our history, of contributing the the moral, ethical and even spiritual debate without fear of retribution. I realize tax-exemption is a “privilege” granted by a benevolent government which realizes positive influence and not a “right” guaranteed by the Constitution. But we’ve devolved politically to the point that that blessing seems to be less valued as in the past.

Johnson introduced the 501c3 legislation, and got it passed. If you READ it, you’ll discover that churches have ALWAYS been tax-exempt. It is only those ‘churches’ who become desirous of the dainties from Caesar’s table that ally themselves with the Beast by voluntarily choosing to apply for and take 501c3 status.
When they foolishly do this, they become – for Federal purposes, which are by no means benign – corporate entities subject to all the rules and regulations governing corporations. A corporation is defined in US law as a “fictional entity.” Do “fictional entities” have souls? Ergo, 501c3 “churches” are “CINO’s”, i.e. “Churches in Name Only.” They are apostates, the scarlet woman, drunk with the blood of prophets and martyrs, riding the back of the Beast. Is Christ’s church in the world and OF the world, or is it in the world but NOT of the world? One cannot be MORE “of the world” than by taking corporate status and allying oneself with Caesar. Technically, what you have is a GOD-given right which is SECURED only by the honor and integrity of those taking – and more importantly, KEEPING – their Oaths of office.

However:
The Johnson amendment is a direct violation of the separation of church & state that was set up by the founding fathers.
First, it’s not an Amendment, but a law. i happen to think it’s a SNEAKY law, designed specifically to entrap Free Churches of Christ and turn them into Apostate allies of the Beast, but it’s nothing but a law.
Second, the phrase “separation of church and state” was taken from a letter from Jefferson to a Baptist church. It appears neither in the Constitution(Supreme Law of the Land) nor in the DoI, which is NOT recognized as US Law.

One thing I have never understood is why Jews, as a solid block, vote Democratic. It seems so contrary to their beliefs and way of life. The One and ONLY Way to heaven is to have the true faith in Jesus Christ alone as your Savior ( and only God can give you that faith to believe ) and if you have that faith or hopefully get that faith sometime soon, you will then see sin much differently and hate it and you will then pick up your daily cross, turn from your sins and follow Christ in what He teaches in the Bible.

I started a comment, but I don’t know what happened to it so I’ll address a couple of issues. First of all “separation of church and state” is a misnomer. Check it out on Google.
While I believe in free speech, I know that in a worship service or otherwise I do not want my pastor to suggest that I vote for someone that I would definitely not be in favor of; in church we need to be encouraged to pray for our nation and that the Lord will lead us to vote for the best person to lead our country.

I have been asking ministers to abandon their 501C3 exemption for over 25 year now. They have all been afraid of the IRS. Why should a church even have to deal with the IRS? It,s not part of the government. 26 CFR has never been passed into law. There is supposed to be Separation of Church and State. Any statute claiming otherwise is null and void in it creation and prevented by the Constitution.

Lyndon b johnson was out of line when he pasted an amendment threatening pastors that they might lose their tax exempt status if they discussed politics. He was sly and clever knowing that republicans are usually Christians and that by silencing their pastors he would increase the likelihood that democrats would be elected.
Pastors should and must inform their congregation of politicians who are not honest and are not following God’s laws. This government, and especially lyndon b johnson, had absolutely no right to infringe upon pastor’s freedom of speech.
If we had a viable congress, an equal one third part of our government, they would have over turned johnson’s amendment a long time ago. Too bad that their primary concern is collecting money for themselves.
If the states follow the example set by Oklahoma and declare themselves to be sovereign states, they can exempt themselves from the terrible Johnson amendment. The states are now our only hope of surviving this government.
My problem with the Johnson aAmendment is that it does not seem to be enforced equally across the political spectrum. I have no problem with churches staying out of politics, but it should apply equally regardless of the party affiliation of the candidate.
The TEA Party was an opening look at what may be in store for the next president. Many people in this country are fed up with a federal government that eagerly infringes on the rights and values of Americans. I am fed up with judges who invent new constitutional rights. That isn’t their job. The founders of our country never intended for a group of 9 people to be able to negate the will of the people and replace it with their own values and ideas.
As for Mr. Trump making heaven, he can take care of that concern by talking with the pastor of an evangelical Christian church. Ultimately attending a church occasionally, being on a church board, or riding by a church isn’t going to get a person into heaven. Repenting of one’s sins and asking Jesus to save them is how a person gets to heaven. Based on a TV interview I’ve seen of Mr. Trump, he isn’t headed for heaven.

“Separation of church and state” was an unfortunate phrase used by Jefferson in a private letter to a minister. It was meant to reassure the minister that the government would not interfere with lawful religious practices. It was never meant to imply that religion’s freedom of speech would be abridged or that religion would be denied an influence in government. The prohibition against establishing a state religion was to prevent the sort of situation that existed in England where the government controlled the Church of England and the King dictated doctrine and other church matters. Many of the ancestors of those attending the constitutional convention had come to the new world to escape exactly that.
Thomas Jefferson also warned: “Can the liberties of a nation be thought secure when we have removed their only firm basis, a conviction in the minds of the people that these liberties are a gift of God? That they are not to be violated but with his wrath?”
