According to reports, presumptive Democratic presidential nominee Hillary Clinton has cut her short list for a running mate down to two choices –Sen. Tim Kaine of Virginia, an early favorite for the role, and dark horse candidate Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack of Iowa.
The two “have emerged as the leading candidates on a longer list of finalists Hillary Clinton is considering for her vice-presidential running mate, according to interviews with multiple Democrats with knowledge of her deliberations,” The Washington Post reported Tuesday.
Kaine, 58, is a former Virginia governor who previously headed the Democratic National Committee and is well-liked within the party establishment and is seen as a running mate who could appeal to swing voters in his home state. Kaine was an early and consistent favorite for the nod.
Vilsack, 65, is the former governor of Iowa and a longtime Clinton pal, and his name at the top of the shortlist has surprised political analysts. His family ties to the Clintons date back to 1972 when his late brother-in-law worked with Hillary Clinton, and while he remains popular in Iowa, some of Vilsack’s positions draw criticism from far-left voters. He has supported the Trans-Pacific Partnership trade deal, which is backed by Obama, but opposed by party progressives.
“I do not think that Tom Vilsack would excite the populist, progressive base of the Democratic Party in the way an Elizabeth Warren might, or a Sherrod Brown might or even a Tom Perez,” said Neil Sroka, spokesman for the progressive group Democracy for America.
Of course, the remaining two Clinton choices aren’t set in stone.
“Several Democrats emphasized that the fact that Kaine and Vilsack appear to be the leading contenders does not preclude Clinton’s continuing to weigh her choices from a larger list of contenders,” The Washington Post reported.
It remains to be seen who the tight-lipped Clinton campaign ultimately favors — the early favorite, the dark horse, or someone else entirely.

Well, the concluding sentence of Amendment 12 states that “No person constitutionally ineligible to the office of President shall be eligible to that of Vice-President….” The same circumstances would also bar Obummer from ever being picked as a VP choice on an otherwise legitimate ticket.

In private business, an employee turns over all electronic documents before leaving the post; why is hillary allowed to do it with official government documents????

I agree with almost 90% of the comments above as an independent. A third party candidate (one with pizazz) could carry this nation away in a heart beat. Either one of the two could get us into a third world war, either one of the two are only interested in ME ME ME MY MY MY NOW NOW NOW. Neither has the historical stature to sit at a negotiation and act as a diplomat. One would be lying and the other would be demanding. America is in real trouble if we do not do something with a 3rd party, There is no one on the horizon at this time, But history has told us a lot as how many VP’s have bitten the dust after they have risen to the administrative position even in my lifetime. Hence, do not put your bets on either candidate at this time, there are months for the stew to boil, and believe me it would shock me if either one can survive the pot til November.
