A heartbreaking and chilling new detail has emerged in the months-long disappearance of Nancy Guthrie. One of the ransom notes sent to her family reportedly apologized for her death early in the investigation.
A second ransom email was sent to TMZ on February 6, five days after the 84-year-old mother of “Today” co-anchor Savannah Guthrie vanished from her Tucson, Arizona home, according to numerous reports. The email reportedly came from the same IP address as earlier ransom communications connected to the case.
“It opened with a sputtering and labored ‘apology’ — that was the word used by a source close to the case — for Guthrie’s inadvertent death,” Air Mail recently reported.
The note reportedly implied the kidnappers were willing to return her corpse to the family… for a price.
Investigators reportedly found elements of the note credible, because they correctly described what Guthrie had been wearing the night she disappeared and talked about a damaged floodlight in the backyard of her home that authorities had not yet made public.
From the ransom communications, investigators reportedly developed a profile of the suspect as “a ruthless, educated local who saw their chance at an unscrupulous windfall and grabbed it.”
Nancy Guthrie disappeared from her Catalina Foothills home in the early hours of February 1. The case, now well past 100 days old, has drawn national attention and a combined reward of more than $1.2 million for information leading to her location. No arrests have been made.
The investigation remains active, and the FBI continues to ask anyone with information to come forward.
