Former President Barack Obama suddenly broke down into tears during a public reception of the opening of the Obama Presidential Center in Chicago yesterday, in a move nobody saw coming.
During yesterday’s ceremony, Barack’s wife and former first lady Michelle Obama stunned the audience by donning a skirt with an image that turned her husband into an emotional wreck.
Michelle paid homage to her late mom at the reception, wearing a custom Acne Studios pencil skirt with a portrait of Marian Robinson, who died in 2024.
Barack was visibly emotional on stage, prompting Michelle to address the room.
“I am so proud of my husband. He’s really messed up, I’m giving him some time, because this beautiful skirt that my stylist Meredith Koop picked out, that is a portrait — my favorite portrait of my mom — he didn’t know it existed until just a few minutes ago,” she said.
“I’ve had a few weeks to settle down in the beauty of this skirt, but it’s messing him up for good reason. But Marian would have been so proud, she was so proud of her son-in-law and the man that he is and has been to our family, always dreaming probably way too big, but always pulling it off.”

Koop — Obama’s longtime collaborator and the co-author of “The Look,” a recent retrospective on the former first lady’s most memorable fashion moments — orchestrated the tribute without Barack knowing, and led to the emotional reaction.
Koop has been deeply involved with Michelle Obama’s post-White House fashion.
Earlier this year, Koop also helped Obama re-create her 1980s Princeton-era denim outfit for an appearance on the “Call Her Daddy” podcast.
Barack later shared a video from the event on Instagram, calling his mother-in-law and her late husband Fraser Robinson “salt of the earth, bedrock people.”
He recalled how Marian “made a home for Michelle and Craig here on the South Side of Chicago, not with a lot, but with a lot of love and hope and perspective and wisdom.”
The couple’s emotional appearance comes amid growing concern about the fragility of the Obama’s marriage.
Barack recently admitted to The New Yorker that his return to political campaigning since Trump’s reelection has created “genuine tension” at home with Michelle, who he said wants him to ease up and spend more time with her.
Michelle has been increasingly absent from public events alongside her husband over the past year.
Just last month, The Daily Mail reported Michelle Obama looked “alarmingly thin” in photos, which circulated widely on social media and reignited a debate that began months ago that Michelle was in stress over her marriage.

Obama was seen last November already looking noticeably thin during a recent photo shoot. The New York Post reported at the time that she had been using Ozempic or another GLP-1 weight loss drug.
