A massive manhunt entered its fourth day Monday for the gunman who killed two students and wounded nine others at Brown University in Rhode Island, after a person of interest detained over the weekend was released from custody.

Authorities released new surveillance video and images Monday showing the suspect dressed in black walking near the Brown University campus. The FBI and Providence Police are offering a $50,000 reward for information leading to an arrest and conviction.

The shooting occurred around 4:05 p.m. Saturday inside a first-floor classroom at Brown where students were studying for final exams. The gunman fired more than 40 rounds from a 9mm handgun before fleeing on foot through the Hope Street exit, according to law enforcement officials.

Two students were killed in the attack. Ella Cook, a 19-year-old sophomore from Alabama who served as vice president of the Brown College Republicans chapter, and Mukhammad Aziz Umurzokov, an Uzbek American student from Virginia who was studying to become a neurosurgeon.

Cathedral Church of the Advent in Birmingham confirmed Cook was one of its parishioners.

Nine other students were wounded in the shooting. Rhode Island Hospital said Monday that six patients remain in critical stable condition, one is in critical condition, and another is in stable condition. One patient has been discharged.

One of the wounded students was identified as Kendall Turner, who attended Durham Academy in Durham, North Carolina. The school said Turner is in critical but stable condition and is receiving care at a local hospital with her parents by her side.

A 24-year-old man was detained early Sunday morning at a Hampton Inn about 20 miles from Providence, after a tip was received by the FBI. However, authorities released him Sunday night.

“Evidence now points in a different direction,” Rhode Island Governor Dan McKee said at a news conference Sunday night.

“Obviously we have a murderer out there,” Rhode Island Attorney General Peter Neronha said bluntly.

Providence Mayor Brett Smiley said authorities are confident they are looking for a single gunman based on surveillance video.

“We do have a small, short clip of video footage that we do believe is the person that we’re looking for,” Smiley said Monday on ABC. “And right now we don’t have any evidence to suggest that it was more than that individual which has been seen in that video.”

The mayor said no credible threats have been received against the campus community or greater Providence since the shooting. Law enforcement has enhanced police presence around schools throughout the city and is going door to door asking residents for video footage that could help identify the shooter.

Brown University has canceled all remaining classes, exams, and projects for the fall 2025 semester.

Anyone with useful information has been urged to contact the Providence Police Department at 401-272-3121 or the 0nline FBI Tip Center.
