Renaming Robert E. Lee to… Trump?

A YU-U-U-GE name is the most popular suggested replacement name for a Texas elementary school named after the top hero of the Confederacy.

Donald J. Trump Elementary was the most popular suggestion with 45 submissions out of 240 received, according to Austin Independent School District officials.

The second-most popular suggestion was 34 submissions to keep the present name. Other popular namesakes included author Harper Lee and artists Russell Lee and Elizabet Ney. Among those also receiving votes were Willie Nelson, Spike Lee and Stevie Ray Vaughn.

The Texas capital’s school board voted last month to replace the Confederate general as the school name. It could decide on a new name May 23.

The Associated Press contributed to this article.

This is just like the Confederate Flag debate. We can’t undo our history. Robert E. Lee was an honest, honorable man who happened to command the Confederate Army. Don’t erase the history.

I fully concur Arthur, he was honest and a hero.

Political Correctness once again run amuck by the left. I suppose they have a magic wane they can wave & the history of the United States will disappear completely! Just goes to show how important the upcoming election is! If we allow Hillary to appoint the next 2 or 3 Supreme Court Judges we can imagine just how far to the left this country will be forced! All the more reason this former Democrat will vote Republican!!

I’m in total agreement with Don. Not at all interested in seeing this country go down the tubes to the progressive socialists. In all of human history there has never been a Utopian society that survived. They either got whipped out or went into complete bondage.

The funny thing is the kids that go there are not affected in any way by the schools name. The civil war is no longer taught in the Texas History classes any of the public schools, and this school is an elementary school. It’s the parents that insisted the name change at the cost of the tax payers. And no you can’t erase history. Thousands of $$ being wasted that could be used to help all the schools in the district. Not a smart or logical move in my opinion.

Totally agree…political correctness has wasted so much of our money..it’s taxation without representation.

The school board should leave the name alone or name it after a deceased person who accomplished great things. By removing Lee’s name this will be nothing more than an attempt at cultural cleansing. The board could name it after some geographic feature in the area.

I could agree with that Justin if it wasn’t going to be so expensive. Just removing the Robert E and leaving the Lee has been reported to cost $14,000. This school was built in 1939 and has been updated over the years. I was at the school recently and personally I think It could use some more updating or adding full time teaching postitions to the teachers that are only there part time. Like the special reading and math teachers. Changing the name won’t benefit the kids in the future. Reading and math will.

Give teachers the money to use in their classrooms! They spend a lot of their own salary on things they need for the kids!!

If we are going to erase history, Let’s start with mohamed.

I think Justin has put the whole thing in focus.

Lee fought for the Confederacy with a heavy heart . A deeply honorable and respected man who fought for the South because he was born there .
If this a reason to replace his name because the South wanted to maintain slavery , it’s a culturally fatal decision . Men are not all perfect , they have faults , even the greatest in our history books . And that’s the real lesson of history . It makes us examine our selfs . To sit here in 2016 and judge people over 150 years ago as all bad or all good is not only ridiculous , but it shines the spot light on who’s doing the judging . Do these judges of good and bad have perfection in their lives to make such judgements ? Yes , the Social Leftist Progressives think they are above everyone .
Read history , this has happened before and the outcome , it’s impact on society , is not a good one .

Using funds to change the name of an elementary school is an asinine move. Can the children learn t read any better in a school with a different name. This falls into the category of “keeping Austin weird”, in my opinion. Is the welfare of the children really at the heart of what you do? Doesn’t sound like it to me. Get real!

“The question is seldom asked: Is our children learning?”
      ~George W. Bush

But i agree with the majority of the posters here; leave the name alone.

Reminded me of the great hoo-rah about re-naming the Washington National Airport the Ronald Reagan National Airport because the proponents wanted to “name it after a President.” Hello?!? George Washington? Many people, unfortunately, are SUCH morons.

Besides, the denial of history only assures it’s repetition; if you can’t mention it, you can’t learn from it, can you? It is when a people forget the lessons of history that it repeats itself…and seldom in a Good Way.

The politicians are just plain ignorant.
You cant change history. But if they try
Trump does have a nice ring to it.

Not to mention “Animal Farm,” with his prophetic “some animals are more equal than others,” meaning above the law…

BTW, George Orwell was his pen name; his real name is Eric Arthur Blair.
