[Watch] Biggest ever NASCAR crash shakes up playoffs

A chaotic NASCAR Cup Series race at Talladega Superspeedway ended with Ricky Stenhouse Jr. claiming victory after a massive 27-car pileup reshaped the field in the closing laps.

The crash, which tied for the largest in NASCAR’s modern era, involved eight of the 12 playoff contenders and dramatically altered the race’s outcome.

The massive crash happened with just five laps remaining in the race. Austin Cindric, leading at the time, lost control after receiving a strong push from Brad Keselowski, who was in turn being pushed by Joey Logano. Cindric’s car spun in front of the tightly-packed field, triggering a melee that collected nearly the entire lead pack.

“It’s so tough to win these races. It’s so tough to miss the wrecks,” Stenhouse said after the race. “These races are just chaos when it comes down to the end.”

The crash’s aftermath also sparked controversy, with teams questioning NASCAR’s handling of the cleanup. Some argued that Stenhouse’s car, which had visible damage including a chunk of sheet metal missing from the driver’s side door, should have been forced to pit for repairs.

The race was red-flagged for nearly nine minutes for cleanup, leaving just 22 cars on the lead lap for a two-lap overtime sprint to the finish. Stenhouse emerged victorious in a three-wide photo finish against Keselowski and William Byron.

For Stenhouse, the win marked his first since the 2023 Daytona 500 and his fourth career Cup Series victory.

“It felt really good. This team has put a lot of hard work in,” Stenhouse said. “We knew that this track is one of ours to come get.”

The crash and its aftermath significantly impacted the playoff standings. William Byron’s third-place finish secured his spot in the next round, while Joey Logano, Daniel Suarez, Austin Cindric, and Chase Briscoe now find themselves below the cutline heading into next week’s elimination race at Charlotte.

Ryan Blaney, last year’s champion, narrowly avoided a severe blow to his playoff hopes despite being involved in an earlier crash. He finished the race in 6th place in the standings, salvaging his position due to the late-race carnage.

Daniel Suarez faced a particularly challenging day, starting with a pass-through penalty that put him a lap down early in the race. He eventually finished 26th after being caught in the late crash but managed to gain one spot in the playoff standings.
