UFC champion’s next career? Ireland’s president

He’s big. He’s bold. And he’s certainly brash.

It’s that attitude that made Conor McGregor a MMA champion and a bonafide global superstar.

And while it’s been some time since McGregor stepped into the octagon, it hasn’t stopped him from making a name for himself.

And if you ask McGregor himself — who is never short of words — he believes he should be the next president of his home country, Ireland.

McGregor posted on social media a cryptic posted that appears to announce he is running for President of Ireland in the 2025 election.

“As President I hold the power to summon the Dáil as well as dissolve it,” he wrote to his official social media account. “So as i said before, I would have all the answers the people of Ireland seek from these thieves of the working man, these disrupters of the family unit, these destructors of small businesses, and on and on and on!”

As President I hold the power to summon the Dáil as well as dissolve it. So as i said before, I would have all the answers the people of Ireland seek from these thieves of the working man, these disrupters of the family unit, these destructors of small businesses, and on and on…

McGregor continued by floating the idea of representing the citizens of his country should he be elected President.

“These charlatans in their positions of power would be summoned to answer to the people of Ireland and I would have it done by day end,” McGregor confidently stated.

“Or I would be left with no choice but to dissolve the Dáil entirely. Stop the train until. The people of Ireland deserve the answers they seek. Point blank,” McGregor wrote.

“Ireland needs an active President employed wholly by the people of Ireland. It is me,” he wrote, seemingly boasting about his capability to be the best person for the job.

According to Fox News, Ireland’s current president, Michael D. Higgins, is currently serving in his second, seven-year term and is ineligible for next year’s election.

This would not be the first time someone from the MMA world has dipped their toes into politics.

According to The Daily Mail, In 2020, former UFC champion Tito Ortiz won a seat on the Huntington Beach city council in California, becoming mayor pro tem of the city, a largely ceremonial role that would have required Ortiz to step in if the mayor became incapacitated. He resigned less than a year later following a series of controversies.

Two years later, former UFC lightweight champion BJ Penn launched a campaign to win the Republican nomination for governor of Hawaii. He lost by a significant margin but refused to accept defeat despite the Hawaii supreme court dismissing his election complaint, according to the outlet.

As for McGregor? has not fought since he lost to Dustin Poirier in 2021 after breaking his leg during the fight.

He was slated to fight Michael Chandler at UFC 303 back in June, but the fight was called off after he broke his toe during training. He vowed to make a quick recovery, but UFC President Dana White confirmed last month that it was unlikely that McGregor would step back into the octagon this year.

“We talked, and he wants to fight,” White said at the time. “We’ll figure it out. Not this year. He won’t fight this year.”
