Family of late congresswoman reaches settlement with care facility

The family of former U.S. Representative Eddie Bernice Johnson has reached an accord with the Baylor Scott & White Institute for Rehabilitation in Dallas, following allegations of neglect that preceded her death.

This agreement, announced by family attorney Les Weisbrod during a press conference in Dallas, marks a significant development in what could have potentially become a contentious legal battle.

The resolution involves two primary components: an undisclosed financial donation to the Eddie Bernice Johnson Lives Foundation and the establishment of a nursing scholarship bearing the name of the late congresswoman. These measures serve not only as a form of restitution but also as a means to perpetuate Johnson’s legacy in the fields of healthcare and education.

The circumstances surrounding Johnson’s death had initially sparked serious concerns. In January, Weisbrod had alleged that Johnson’s demise resulted from an infection after she was found in unsanitary conditions at the rehabilitation facility following back surgery. These allegations pointed to a grave lapse in patient care, raising questions about the standards of care in healthcare institutions.

The decision to resolve the matter without legal action represents a departure from the initially anticipated course of events. Weisbrod had previously indicated the family’s intention to file a lawsuit against the facility. However, the proactive approach taken by Baylor Scott & White in initiating discussions for resolution led to this amicable settlement.

While the exact amount of the donation remains undisclosed, Weisbrod characterized it as “very generous.” This outcome underscores the potential for constructive resolution in cases of alleged medical negligence, emphasizing the possibility of achieving positive outcomes without resorting to protracted legal proceedings.

Kirk Johnson, the son of the late congresswoman, expressed the family’s readiness to move forward. The foundation established in his mother’s name will focus on supporting various causes, including education, women’s rights, family stability, and world peace. This approach ensures that Eddie Bernice Johnson’s lifelong commitment to public service and social progress continues to have an impact even after her passing.

This resolution not only addresses the specific circumstances of Johnson’s case but also sets a precedent for how healthcare institutions might respond to allegations of negligence.

By choosing to honor Johnson’s legacy through educational initiatives and philanthropic efforts, Baylor Scott & White demonstrates a commitment to learning from past incidents and contributing positively to the community.
