Tragedy unfolded off the coast of Oahu, Hawaii, on Sunday afternoon when a professional lifeguard was killed in a shark attack while surfing. The victim, 49-year-old Tamayo Perry, was a respected member of the City and County of Honolulu Ocean Safety department and a well-known figure in the professional surfing community.

The attack occurred near Goat Island, a popular spot for surfers and beachgoers. At approximately 1 p.m., emergency services received a distress call reporting a man with apparent shark bites. Responding swiftly to the scene were Honolulu Ocean Safety, along with the city’s fire, police, and emergency medical services departments.

Lifeguards, using a jet ski, managed to bring Perry to shore at Mālaekahana Beach on Oahu’s North Shore. Despite their quick action and the efforts of paramedics, Perry was unfortunately pronounced dead at the scene.

The loss of one of their own hit the Hawaiian lifeguard community particularly hard.

Perry had been a dedicated member of the Ocean Safety department since July 2016, serving as a lifeguard on the North Shore. His colleagues described him as more than just an employee, but as a beloved figure in the community and the surfing world at large.

In response to the attack, Ocean Safety personnel took immediate action by posting shark warnings in the surrounding area. This precautionary measure aimed to protect other beachgoers and surfers from potential danger.

Kurt Lager, the Acting Chief of Honolulu Ocean Safety, spoke highly of Perry at a news conference following the deadly attack.

“He was a lifeguard loved by all,” Lager said about Perry. “He’s well known on the North Shore. He’s a professional surfer known worldwide.”

Honolulu Mayor Rick Blangiardi also paid tribute to Perry, calling him “a legendary waterman and highly respected.” The mayor described Perry’s death as “a tragic loss,” underscoring the impact this event has had on the community.

This incident serves as a somber reminder of the inherent risks in open water, even for the most experienced watermen. It also highlights the bravery and dedication of lifeguards like Perry, who put their lives on the line to ensure the safety of others enjoying the ocean.

The surfing and lifeguard communities, along with the entire island of Oahu, are mourning the loss of Tamayo Perry. His legacy as a skilled surfer, dedicated lifeguard, and beloved community member will undoubtedly live on, inspiring future generations of ocean enthusiasts and safety professionals.
