In a recording, Supreme Court Justice Samuel Alito was recently overheard agreeing with a conservative vision of trying to make our nation a more godly place.
The media immediately flew off the deep end, stunned that Alito was expressing mainstream Christian beliefs. Now, the House has convened a panel to force an ethics code onto the Supreme Court… and Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, D-N.Y., has some crackpot ideas (even for her).
Critics accused Ocasio-Cortez of not even understanding the basic checks-and-balances system set up by the founding fathers between the three branches of government.
“Of course, Justice Alito’s position is laughable, this idea that the court can be accountable to nobody… Not only is it unacceptable, but to have any one of our co-equal branches be completely unaccountable to the others is paving the path to authoritarianism, tyranny, the abuse of power in the United States. It is structurally and completely unsustainable,” Ocasio-Cortez told MSNBC’s Chris Hayes this week.
“And so it is not a question… of if Congress has jurisdiction and power over the Supreme Court… It is [a question of] what power are we going to exercise in order to rein in a fundamentally unaccountable and rogue court.”
Ocasio-Cortez appeared on MSNBC alongside Rep. Jamie Raskin, D-Md. Ocasio-Cortez said she would try to impose the House’s ethics code onto the Supreme Court… with Congressional oversight, of course, which would be a breakdown of the very basics of checks-and-balances.
“We raised and discussed a varying degree of measures, from term limits to an actual binding ethics standard,” Ocasio-Cortez said.
“Congressman Raskin and myself will be introducing forthcoming legislation to even have the Supreme Court be subject to the same $50 gift rule that he and I are subject to, as everyone else who are members of Congress.”
Raskin elaborated on the the Democrats idea.
“The Oversight Democrats wanted to respond to the national clamor over this crisis of legitimacy at the Supreme Court. And so we analyzed the ethics crisis. We analyzed the political crisis around confirmations that got us into this,” Raskin said.
“There’s no process by which we can hold any of them accountable… So we began to explore different avenues of holding them accountable… Congress has a ban on outside employment, and — as A.O.C. was saying — we have a $50 gift ban… We want a $50 gift ban for U.S Supreme Court justices. They make $300,000 a year. Pay for your own lunch, and pay for your own vacation.”
Ocasio-Cortez agreed: Give us power over the Supreme Court.
“All of us, as public servants and federal public servants, whether it is both chambers of Congress, any of us are subject to [an] extremely similar, uniform code of ethics,” Ocasio-Cortez said. “It’s almost unbelievable that we are sitting here in the year 2024 over 200 years after the establishment of this country, that we have not addressed this issue.”
Raskin closed with a sound bite.
“The private corruption of the justices mirrors the public corruption of justice,” he claimed.
Of course, Democrats had no such issue when the Supreme Court was controlled by the liberal majority for decades.
Now? The power hungry Democrats want it back — by hook or by crook.
