Miles Russell, a 15-year-old golf prodigy from Florida, has been making waves in the golfing world with his incredible achievements at such a young age.
In April, he made history by becoming the youngest player ever to make the cut in a Korn Ferry Tour event, shooting an impressive 5-under 66 at the Lecom Suncoast Classic in Longwood, Florida. Now, Russell has been granted a sponsor exemption to make his PGA Tour debut at the upcoming Rocket Mortgage Classic in Detroit.
For Russell, this opportunity is a dream come true. “Ever since I first started playing golf, my dream has been to compete on the PGA Tour and test my game against the best players,” he said. “I’m looking forward to making the most of the experience later this month.”
Russell’s golfing journey has been nothing short of remarkable. He has been taking online classes since the eighth grade to focus on his golfing career, and his dedication has clearly paid off. In 2023, he was named the American Junior Golf Association player of the year, a title he earned through his incredible performances, including a seven-shot victory at the Junior PGA Championship and becoming the youngest winner of the Junior Players Championship.
The Rocket Mortgage Classic, set to take place at the Detroit Golf Club starting on June 27, will be a true test of Russell’s skills as he competes alongside some of the world’s best golfers. The tournament’s defending champion, Rickie Fowler, will also be in attendance, adding to the excitement and anticipation surrounding the event.
Jason Langwell, the Executive Director of the Rocket Mortgage Classic, expressed his enthusiasm for having Russell compete in the tournament, stating, “He has proved with his many accomplishments at such a young age that he belongs, and we are excited to see Miles compete alongside the world’s best golfers here at Detroit Golf Club.”
Russell’s talent and potential have not gone unnoticed. Earlier this year, he nearly qualified for the PGA Tour’s Puerto Rico Open, losing in a playoff during the Monday qualifier. His performance at such a high level at his age is a testament to his skill and dedication to the sport.
After the Rocket Mortgage Classic, Russell is expected to return to the Detroit area in July to compete in the U.S. Amateur at Oakland Hills Country Club, further showcasing his ability to compete at the highest levels of amateur golf.
While Russell’s accomplishments are already impressive, he is not the youngest player to make the cut in a PGA Tour-sanctioned event. That record belongs to Guan Tianlang of China, who, at the age of 14, made the cut at the 2013 Masters while playing as the Asia-Pacific Amateur champion.
As Miles Russell continues to make strides in his golfing career, the world will be watching to see how he fares against the best in the sport. With his talent, dedication, and passion for the game, there is no doubt that he has a bright future ahead of him in the world of professional golf.
