While Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders pleaded with Pres. Barack Obama to stay on the sidelines as the race for the Democratic presidential nomination plays out, Hillary Clinton seemed to dangle a fat carrot in front of Obama this week.
She said she’d be open to appointing Obama to the United State Supreme Court.
But first, she says, voters need to elect her and give control of the Senate to her Democrat allies.
“I mean he’s brilliant, and he can set forth an argument, and he was a law professor, so he’s got all the credentials,” Clinton said, responding to a question from a voter at an Iowa event this week.
It’s expected that the next president could appoint at least two Supreme Court justices during his or her tenure.
And while Clinton made it sound like she hadn’t given the idea of appointing Obama much thought before she was asked the question, campaigns regularly plant questions like these during rallies and town hall events.
Plus, Clinton is well aware that Obama is at least intrigued by a Supreme Court job.
A 2014 New Yorker article said that Obama appeared “tempted” by an appointment to the Supreme Court.
“I love the law, intellectually,” he said in the piece. “I love nutting out these problems, wrestling with these arguments.”
A Supreme Court appointment makes more sense for Obama’s ego than his bank account. A Supreme Court justice earns a salary of around $214,000, while Obama is expected to command millions on the speaking circuit as an ex-president.
And an Obama confirmation would be no easy task. While prospective justices go out of their way to appear apolitical, that’s not a luxury Obama would have. His positions on everything from abortion to gun control are well known, and the idea that he could apply the law impartially appears far-fetched.
